Nimstead Updater guide
How to verify a Windows app update result.
To verify an app update, compare the expected version with a fresh observation of the installed version. An installer finishing successfully is a separate result. This guide covers supported application updates in Nimstead Updater, which is in private beta.
An update is available
A provider has reported an available version for a supported application. Review the application, installed version, available version and source before deciding to act. A familiar display name alone is not enough to establish that a package is the right one.
The installer has finished
The installer’s outcome describes the installation attempt. It is separate from evidence that the expected version is now installed. If the result still needs review, do not assume that running the installer again is the right answer.
The version is confirmed
A fresh check of the installed version can provide evidence that the expected version is present. This says something specific about that application and check. It is not a statement that all software on the PC is current or secure.
A check could not finish
Treat the result as incomplete. Check the reported provider status, deal with any prompt or connectivity problem, then check again. Previously recorded information may still be useful, but it is not a fresh observation.
Example: installation finished, version still uncertain
In this illustrative example, an application was recorded as version 2.4 and version 2.5 was offered. The installer finishes, but the version check cannot complete. Record the installation outcome and the incomplete check separately. After resolving the check failure, a fresh observation of 2.5 supports the version result. The earlier 2.4 record alone cannot tell you what is installed now.
Recheck and retry are different. Rechecking asks what is installed. Retrying attempts an operation again. Read which action you are taking before using it.
A restart is required
Save your work and review the Windows or installer guidance. Updater does not automatically restart your PC; a restart requirement is still something you need to address.
When the result remains unclear
Keep the application name, provider, versions and visible outcome together. Avoid sharing raw logs or screenshots that contain usernames, file paths or other private information. During the private beta, use the contact channel supplied with your invitation.
If you need to postpone an application update, read the guide to ignore, skip and snooze controls. For an IT team reviewing many devices, start with what to verify for patch assurance.
